Documentum 6.5 SP2 backup strategy

Hi there,

I'm looking towards implementing a hot backup strategy but the recommendations I have found so far favor a cold backup approach.

Has anyone tried and settled the hot backup strategy?

What are the risks associated to that apart from having an inconsistency between Documentum and Oracle?

I know that CYA allows you to perform hot back ups of Documentum. They do this by constantly making row level backups of everything, so that no inconsistencies take place. The last time I remember, CYA was pretty expensive.

The main concern with taking “hot” or “live” backups of Documentum is the risk of either orphaned/unreferenced content (content objects existing in the content backup that are unreferenced by the corresponding Oracle backup), or broken pointers, where there are references in the Oracle backup to content objects that do not exist in the content backup. Introducing the Full Text Index server into the picture only increases the difficulties associated with keeping all components aligned. Worse risks, such as a corrupt docbase due to an inconsistent backup of the Oracle environment, can usually be mitigated by using a DB-specific backup tool that can ensure the consistency of the database backup.

In order to backup Documentum in a consistent state without taking it offline, there are a complicated set of manual steps that must be followed, and it usually requires the cooperation of multiple teams within the organization. This manual process is not supported by Documentum.

In response to the comment about CYA being expensive, CYA now offers new pricing plans for CYA SmartRecovery, its hot, granular recovery solution, and also offers a new hot system backup tool called CYA HOTBackup which is designed specifically to enable NetWorker backups within your environment to achieve synchronicity/consistency. The pricing model for this product is different than for CYA SmartRecovery.

My intention was not to violate guidelines and I had no idea that I was doing so. I was just trying to address your post in which you stated that you remembered CYA as being "pretty expensive." Since CYA price plans have been modified and new, less expensive options are available for addressing the issues that are the subject of the discussion thread (i.e. inconsistencies), I thought that it made complete sense to share this information. I apologize if that violated any guidelines and will be more careful with future posts.

I'm not moderator of the forum, just an activie participant. While its hard to draw the line between answering a question and marketing, your post seemed to me that you were marketing/selling CYA product (others can feel differently).
